The Neutron is one of three trail running shoes in the Alpine Running Shoes line, designed for Scarpa SpA by Delineo Design. The result is a super high-performance trail shoe born from in-depth studies on materials and the foot’s movement while tackling classic outdoor trail situations like mountain terrain, hills, and dirt roads. It’s a wonderful example of sport design applied to high-performance athletic footwear.

The Alpine Running line was born from the company’s request to design a new, versatile trail running product suitable for different types of runs. With the Alpine Running line, we guided the company into the trail footwear market. This was a significant investment, which necessarily had to fill a gap identified in the target market. For this reason, the market was mapped, revealing several shortcomings in the existing offerings. Among other things, for example, there was a lack of a product with a good quality-to-price ratio and good durability. The research phase in this project proved particularly important, as it involved a highly technical product intended for use by athletes with specific needs and requiring high performance.
In-house technicians, external collaborators, and discussions with trail athletes were crucial in defining the product’s main characteristics. Grip on any terrain, cushioning ability, and comfort are just a few of these. Designing a trail shoe is never easy, so this was a true sport design project applied to footwear, where Delineo design worked with a multidisciplinary team to design a unique trail shoe. Once the market and target mapping was complete, we proposed developing the initial product into a line of three different shoes. These would vary in weight and suit different customer targets, allowing the brand to offer targeted products that open up new development opportunities. Neutron is the second model we worked on; it’s lighter than the first and suitable for medium to long-distance running.

With Neutron, we designed a shoe with a dynamic and attractive look. Its reduced weight and compact volume allow for high, agile, and reactive performance. The upper’s design features breathable mesh and a main structure that, like an exoskeleton, forms a solid and ergonomic cage. The toe and heel are protected by reinforced inserts with horizontal and vertical grooves that offer stability. To broaden its sales target, the shoe was also designed in a women’s version and a Gore-Tex® version.
